Announcing AileyCamp-Atlanta
I will not use the word can’t to define my possibilities.” – AileyCamp Daily Affirmation

WHAT:

The Fox Theatre is proud to present the first and only AileyCamp in the South.

AileyCamp is an innovative summer and nationally acclaimed youth program conceived by the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater that combines ballet, jazz, modern, and African dance instruction with personal development and creative communication classes for metro-Atlanta middle school students, ages 11 to 14.

AileyCamp is not a training ground for professional dancers, but instead uses dance as a vehicle for developing self-esteem, self-discipline, creative expression, and critical-thinking skills among underserved 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students.

AileyCamp was founded by Alvin Ailey and the Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey in 1989. AileyCamp is a tribute to Ailey’s philosophy of showing that we are all human beings, that color is not important, and that what is important is the quality of our work, of working toward a culture in which the young are not afraid to take chances and can hold onto their values and self-esteem.

Classes in techniques of performance and creative communications deepen the students' awareness of their potential for self-expression. Personal development classes provide counseling in nutrition, conflict resolution, drug abuse prevention, decision-making, and goal setting.

WHO:
Following recruitment presentations, individual applicants are interviewed by AileyCamp staffers and volunteer community leaders. All campers receive full tuition scholarships, breakfast and lunch, camp uniforms, and dance clothing.

AileyCamp targets students with academic, social, and domestic challenges—criteria that often determine a child's risk of dropping out of school. AileyCamp welcomes students who have little opportunity to develop their artistic interests by providing positive adult and peer role models for underserved youths.

At the end of camp, students leave with valuable life skills and a sense of accomplishment before they enter the challenging high school years.

One instructor is sent from the Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation and the remaining instructors are from the metro-Atlanta area. Diane Sales is the director of AileyCamp Atlanta. She is a local dancer and instructor who, as a young New Yorker, received training at the Ailey school and is a former member of the Ailey II Company.

Help us make a child's dream come true!
The cost to send each child to AileyCamp is $1,500.00 for the six week session. However, each of AileyCamp-Atlanta's participants experience the summer program at no charge due to the Fox Theatre's financial assistance. Any and all contributions are greatly appreciated.
