In
conjunction with Broadway Across America – Atlanta
and Theater of the Stars, a variety of Broadway's best
shows visit The Fox Theatre each year.
The Fox Theatre’s Outreach and Education Department
offers unique educational workshops in conjunction with
several of the performances. Students learn various
skills from writing scripts to choreographing dances
to producing musical productions.
For
example, children from the Conyers Boys and Girls
Club, Lakeside High School and North Atlanta High
School saw the Broadway musical Wicked.
After the performance, The Fox Theatre Outreach
and Education Department lead two ethics workshops
that discussed the musical’s characters and
actions. Later, the students worked with a writer to produce works
about their understanding of ethics. |
Architectural
workshops are guided by Randy Taylor, a teaching
artist who works with The Fox Theatre’s Restoration
Department. Using the theatre’s design and
architectural elements, Taylor developed a workshop
that teaches school children about Islamic architecture,
geometry, and math.
This particular workshop may be tailored to children
of any age and includes a tour of The Fox Theatre. |

The
Fox Theatre was selected to participate
in The First Theatre Memories Workshop, sponsored
by the Theatre League, Hilton Hotels, and The Tony
Awards. This one day workshop, held at the downtown
Hilton Hotel, gave children who had never been to
the theatre an in-depth look at what it takes to
produce a Broadway Show.
They worked with professional playwrights, costume
designers, and actors, and followed
up with a trip to The Fox Theatre to see White
Christmas. Participants were then asked to
write an essay about their first theatre experience.
Similar workshops
were held in New York City and Boston.
The essays from all of the workshops were compiled
and the winning essay attended
the 2008 Tony Awards. Atlanta’s own Donald Brown won the competition! |
